Taking your cat on adventures all starts with a good harness training. We started harness training Oliver when he was only 12 weeks old. Because a kitten is still curious, it’s easy to start harness training at this age. The most important part of harness training is a good harness. To get your cat to like the harness it can be a good idea to start with a very light weighted harness and put it on for just a minute. Give your cat lots of cuddles and treats, then take the harness off again. Slowly prolong this process and start playing with your kitten while he’s wearing the harness. Our sign that Oliver was ready to go on an adventure was when he fell asleep while wearing his harness.
Even though a kitten has the perfect age to get harness trained, it’s not impossible to teach older cats to wear a harness. Supakit has an amazing free 10 day boot camp to teach help your cat with the first steps of harness training, but they also off a complete harness training course to make sure you teach your cat in a proper way.
Once your cat is ready to explore the big outside world it’s important to invest in a good cat harness. There are many brands offering harnesses that are especially made for cats. We use two types of harnesses. Our all time favorite is the Made by Emmaceline harness. It’s handmade and has the perfect fit. We are also big fans of the Supakit harnesses which are soft and flexible.
Make sure the harness has a good fit. The shoulders should be able to move freely and your cat should feel comfortable in it.
